Creating your own Apple Software Restore CD (Mac OS 9, ie. Old School)

Required Materials:
-1 computer old enough to run Mac OS 9.
(A list of machines that will only run Mac OS X can be found here).
-1 CD Burner.
-2 bootable partions or hard drives.
(Firewire drives work exceptionally well for the second bootable drive).
-1 blank CD.
-1 Mac OS 9.2 Installer CD.
-1 copy of Roxio Toast Titanium for Mac OS 9.
-1 copy of Apple's OS 9 ASR tools (get them here).

Step 1:
Configure your primary hardrive or partition with the OS, Applications, and settings that your require.
(Keep in mind that a compressed image of this will need to fit on a CD, so don't exceed 800MB.)

Step 2:
Boot your computer from the second drive or partition (you will need to have Mac OS 9.2, Roxio Toast, and the ASR tools installed on this volume).

Step 3:
Create an image of your primary hard drive using Disk Copy 6.5b13 (this should be in the ASR Tools),

Step 3-SubStep A:
Launch Disk Copy

Step 3-SubStep B:
Select "Create Image from Folder" from the "Image" menu.

(Note: Don't use Create Image from Volume or From Device.)


Step 3-SubStep C:

Select the primary volume that you configured in Step 1.

Click Choose.


Step 3-SubStep D:

Save the image on the partion from which you are booted.

Deselect "Mount Image" and "Zero Blocks"

Make the "Format:" "Read-Only Compressed".

Click "Save"


Step 4:
Scan your new image to prep it for restoration.

Step 4-SubStep A:

Select "Scan X+9 image for ASR" from the Scripts menu in Disk Utility.


Step 4-SubStep B:

Select the image that you saved in Step 3.

Click "Open"

This will take anywhere from 5 minutes to an half hour, depending on the size of your image.


Step 5:
Open Toast

Step 6:
Configure the CD.

Step 6-SubStep A:

Click the "New CD" icon at the bottom left of the toast screen.


Step 6-SubStep B:

Be sure that your CD format is "Mac OS CD"


Step 6-SubStep C:

Name your CD.


Step 6-SubStep D:

Drag and Drop the entire "ASR for Mac OS X" folder into the contents of your new CD.


Step 6-SubStep E:

Insert the Mac OS 9.2 Install CD, and drag the "System Folder" into the contents of your new CD.


Step 6-SubStep F:

Click the Arrow beside "ASR for Mac OS X", and find the "Configurations" folder.

Then, drag the image created in steps 3 and 4 into that folder.


Step 7:
Save these settings as a new toast disc image.

Select "Save as Disc Image.." from the "File" menu, and save the file on your boot volume.

Step 8:
Quit Toast

Step 9:
Insert a blank CD.

Step 10:

Double-click on the image you saved in step 7 to open Toast with the correct configuartion.


Step 11:
Click the "Record" button at the buttom of the Toast window.
(Note: If toast gives you an option for burn speed, select the speed of the slowest CD drive to which you will be restoring.)

Once the Burn is Complete:

Step 12:
On a computer which you wish to restore, boot from the CD, by holding down the "c" key.

Step 13:
Once the computer is up, open the "Apple Software Restore" program, inside the "ASR for Mac OS X" folder.

Step 14:

Highlight the image under "Configuration".

Click the "Switch Disk" button until you see the hard drive you wish to overwrite.

Click the Restore button.

When it finishes you will have a freshly cloned hard drive.
